We absolutely loved having you. It was an exciting weekend for us all. However, I may have been more excited then some of the admitted students…

You see, I came to MCW last year as a admitted student and it was my first time every seeing Boston University, and even just Boston. My experience that weekend is what ultimately led me to choose BU. In fact, I bought my sweatshirt and committed that Sunday before I flew back to California, where I’m from.

I hoped I could have that same impact on students this year through hosting and being a part of admissions and asdb. It was actually a little weird reliving the experience from the other side of things. I loved running the ice breakers with my group (Group 12!!) and then leading students on city experience. The best part though, was sitting down with students at dinner and sharing with them all that I love about BU, along with some tips, tricks, and hints for freshman year.

I hope you all had as much fun as I did, but more importantly, I HOPE YOU ALL COME TO BU!

To all of those I met, it was a pleasure, I can see why admissions wants you as a fellow terrier. You were all intelligent and engaging, and a pleasure to host! Hope to see you again come Fall! Go class of 2017!

It has been too long, maybe even two weeks since I last spoke to you all; however, I have returned and am ready to divulge more BU happenings! In my past blog posts I believe I referenced that I studied abroad in New Zealand for a semester, although I never got to share my wonderful experiences. UNTIL NOW! So in 5…4…3…2…1 and then BOOM. Let’s roll.

I arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on July 14, 2012 and stayed there until November 13, 2012. If I had to sum up my experience in a single word, it would be: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. And maybe that does not contain all the feelings I have about the program. Every morning I woke up to a glistening sun, accompanied by a relaxing day at the beach after classes, and a field trip to somewhere else amazing inside New Zealand. In no particular order: I saw the Haka War Dance of the Maori people, went Zorbing (see below), went to the coronation of the Maori King, went on a few cruises, and all around just upped my serotonin levels.

I did my study abroad through the Boston University Abroad program which gave me a supervisor and an internship to help me throughout my entire stay in the country. For those of you that are about to visit the campus, I highly recommend that you put study abroad on your radar now because it will be something you will extremely want to do down the line. I had an amazing time doing it and wish I could have either stayed longer or have done it again.

Well, my time is up yet again, but I will see all of your very soon and I wish you all safe travels!

            Thank you,

            Ryan

P.S. Also in the tradition of me leaving awesome songs, here is a new one I discovered while in New Zealand by the Black Kids: I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You! Enjoy!

Are you guys getting excited for Multicultural Community Weekend? My roommate Sylvia and I are both hosting students, and we can’t wait for Thursday!

I went to CVS today to buy poster board to welcome our students. I tried making it as pretty as I could on my college student budget…

In addition to the plethora of fun events ASDB has planned for the prospective students, Sylvia and I hope to show our students around the city of Boston as well. (A stroll on Newbury, anyone?)

MCW is going to be a blast! Welcome Class of 2017!

When...

The Moment I Chose BU: My Overnight Visit

When you’re choosing where you want to go to college, it’s like choosing your future home. It’s not just the classes and professors that make the college experience, it’s the entire atmosphere that is created by the people and the surroundings that you’ll be living in. When I went to visit BU for an overnight stay, that experience really helped me decide that BU was the place that I wanted to call my future home.

As I arrived at BU with my backpack and sleeping bag, I was anxious to meet my host and pretend that I was a real college student for a day. We went to Warren Towers for dinner and I made waffles. They had a little imprint of Rhett, the boston terrier in the middle of my waffle and it was the first time that I had really seen the school mascot. Being at BU was really different from anything that I had ever experienced in high school but even though it was a new place, eating in the dining hall with my host and her friends made me think of my friends at home, just sitting around a table talking about their day.

After dinner, my host took me to Newbury street just to walk around and shop. I had visited Boston before, but I had never really explored it. When we got to Newbury Street, I fell in love. We walked all the way down to the end of Newbury when we reached the Boston Public Gardens. We had walked a long way, and I did a bit of shopping, H&M, Zara, and All Saints (to name a few) and by the end of the day I felt like a Bostonian. I loved the old brick brownstones and the mix of history with the modern feel of the city. The walk back to her dorm on Bay State was quite long, but I didn’t seem to notice. I felt as if I had found a new hidden treasure in Boston that no one else knew about. Even though Newbury isn’t exactly a part of BU, it is a part of Boston that I fell in love with and walking around the city was a great way for me to get to know BU as a school and as a place to live. I found things about BU that I liked that could not be found on paper, and I would say that by the end of my visit, I had decided that it was the place that I wanted to call my home.

With Multi-cultural weekend coming up, I hope that our visitors will be able to have the same great experience as I did when I visited BU!

My name is Cherice and currently a junior in COM studying Film & TV! As we get ready for MCW (which is just days away!!!) I want share with you a special part of my BU experience thus far. For all you prospective College of Communication students, particularly those entering the Film & TV program. get ready for an amazing experience!

I’m an aspiring documentary filmmaker and the classes you take in COM really prepare you for any type of film production. I’m currently taking Prod 1, a required class for all Film/TV students. You get experience working with a DSLR Canon T2i and a Tascam recorder. I used this camera and sound recorder for this short documentary profile I did on street break dancers. Please have a look. I had a blast shooting this and you will too on your future projects. I’m also currently filming a third film with fellow ASDBers Ryan Fields and Natalie Fritz. We were out last night in the freezing cold filming but it was so much fun! (I’ll post it when I shoot!)

So was this a shameless plug? Yeah. But it’s also to show you guys a piece of all the amazing stuff we get to do as a part of our academic studies here at BU! Whether you’re in SMG or CFA you’ll get hands on experience in whatever field you’ve chosen. Feel free to email me at crhunt@bu.edu if you have any questions.

Can’t wait to meet MCW guests and other Class of 2017 members!

I chose to imitate the street artist Banksy. So with the great weather on Saturday I went outside with spray paint and a giant canvas and spent the day making art. It’s projects like this one that make the College of General Studies unique. Using this same artist I will write an essay for Social Science about how Banksy fits into historical and sociological context.

The college’s interdisciplinary work allows you to see all sides of something, whereas you wouldn’t if you took the classes separately in the College of Arts and Sciences. Our choice in topic was broad as well. We were allowed to choose any artist, writer, poet, director, etc. from any time period, obviously a lot to choose from. The College of General Studies wants its students to love what they’re studying, or at least my teachers. I haven’t once had to write a paper on something I thought was uninteresting or difficult, because we always choose our own topics! It really lets you enjoy the projects, the writing, and the college experience altogether.

It has been far too long; I have been to Auckland, Hong Kong, and a few other places around the world all with one goal in mind: getting back to your o so faithful readers. It is me Ryan! I know it has been a long time, but now I am back in Boston and I am ready to share some of my new adventures with all of you. Most notably, Boston University beating Boston College 6 to 3 at TD Garden!

This past Friday, a few friends and I ventured down to the North End to see the Terriers smash Boston College. Now, I don’t want to take away from the ferociousness of the game by insinuating that the Terriers won easily (which we could have if we had felt like it), but you see we had to warm up ourselves a bit before we could go in for the win.

At the very beginning the game was in Boston College’s favor, with them being ahead by two points at the midway point during the second period. However, BU then scored not only, but two quick goals to tie it. BU was not done here. Soon after, BU went on the offensive and scored an additional four times to BC’s one, making the score a beautiful 6 to 3.

All in all, it was an amazing game and it launched BU into the finals against UMass Lowell for Saturday. I hope to update you all soon on how that went and some future things I do at BU, but until then, I hope you all have a wonderful day and week!

PC. FRENZY. 2013). Last night, I attended a stand-up comedy show featuring Colin Jost and Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live. Let me tell you, it was one of the highlights of my BU experience so far.

Yeah, I went by myself. My friends bailed, but come on… It’s Seth Meyers! Definitely worth it! I got in line early to the pre-party at BU Central to be the first one hundred to score priority seating to the main event. I initially went just for that, but I was pleasantly surprised by BU’s talents. Hilarious comedy and improv groups performed, and the Dear Abbeys graced us with their amazing vocals.

After more waiting, PC finally escorted us to our front-row seats in the Metcalf Ballroom. I sat to the right in the first row — not too bad! One girl even offered me 20 dollars to switch seats with her, but I declined.

Colin Jost opened for Seth Meyers. I didn’t know who he was before the show, but he has gained a new fan. I just found out that he’s also a writer for SNL! Talented guy.

The man of the hour: Seth Meyers. As a huge SNL junkie, he’s the reason I attended. It was kind of weird seeing him in a hoodie and jeans because I’m so used to him wearing a suit and tie on “Weekend Update”. Nevertheless, he did not disappoint! My favorite part was when he read unaired “Update” bits.

I’m really grateful that BU gives us the opportunity to attend so many great events. Never before had I thought that I would be lucky enough to see Seth Meyers live since SNL tickets are so hard to come by. Thank you, BU.

Hi everyone!

Last night, the Boston University College of General Studies hosted a very inspirational speaker. Her name is Benita Singh, she is successful female entrepreneur in the fashion and fabric industry. Benita is the CEO and co-founder of Source4Style, a fashion textile sourcing company. Benita spoke about being a female entrepreneur in destroyed the notion of a so called “glass ceiling”. She was very inspirational because she never wanted to be a businesswoman. She wanted to get her PHD in comparative literature but found her calling in fashion and business while writing her senior thesis in Brazil. Benita Singh is just one of the many distinguished and inspirational speakers and educators that come the Boston University.

The second I walked on campus, I knew it was the place where I was going to graduate from college.

Working on Common App and taking SAT/ACTs were stressful and because I was so secure on where I wanted to go, I took a leap of faith and decided to apply Early Decision. My application was due midnight on Halloween, so I worked hard to make sure I could indulge in the festivities and thankfully I was able to. The worst part about the application process was waiting to receive a reply.

I remember the day I got accepted like it was yesterday (sorry for the cliche, but it’s true). I was in Walmart when I received an e-mail that stated my admission letter was ready to view - I screamed in the shampoo aisle. I checked out what I was buying, I raced home, jumped on my laptop and opened the e-letter. I was in! I jumped up and down and almost broke my laptop in sheer excitement.

I was the first one of my friends to get into college, and I’m still one of the happiest at which school I went to. Hope the same for everyone else who’s starting to make their college decisions.

Bonjour tout le monde! My name is Alberto Medina Jr, I am a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences double majoring in Biology/Pre-Med and French! I am originally from El Paso, TX and boy is this blizzard something! Definitely not like the desert!

Anyway, one thing I love to talk about is diversity and culture, and what a better way to do that than to go abroad! One of the main reasons I chose to attend Boston University was for its amazing study abroad programs! Ever since middle school, I was very interested in the French culture and the language and chose to continue pursuing it up until college, which explains the major. I had the two most best experiences of my life through this amazing resource we have on campus. Two years ago I had the opportunity to go to Grenoble, France where I did one of our pre-med science programs at the university Joseph Fourrier. Most people do not get to go abroad sophomore year, but this program is specifically designed for pre-med students who need to take certain science courses, such as Cell Biology and Organic Chemistry. I took four classes, all in English (I mean let’s be honest, organic chemistry is already hard in English…imagine taking it in a foreign language!). What was even more exciting was the fact that we had actual French students in our classes! I definitely felt like I was incorporated into the culture, more so when I stayed with a host family. I lived with a single mom and her 12 year old son, they were sweet and quite accommodating. I also had a small internship in a chemistry lab where chemists were doing research for synthetic drugs on how to combat cancerous cells. Overall, the experience was inevitably amazing!

This past semester, I had the second opportunity to go abroad…again! Like I said I was obsessed with France and what better way to indulge than to go to Paris, the city of love! This time around I did the Paris Internship Program, where I took three classes (all in French) and then the second half of the semester consisted of an internship. The classes were great! It is awesome that this program provides all your courses in french! If it didnt, then the point of coming here would just be to live in Paris for a semester. People need to know that just because it’s abroad it doesn’t mean all fun and games and easy grades. Not at all! Everything is in french! You study in french, live in french, and eventually work in french. People also need to have at least 4 semesters of french in order to be eligible for the program. That said, since you only take 3 courses the first half, that means that a semester’s worth of material is squished into half of the semester. Not to panic though! It’s reasonable and up to BU standards, so no surprise there

This time I stayed with an older French lady who lives literally 10 minutes away from the Eiffel Tower, I could actually see it from the living room, the view was AMAZING. I am quite comfortable as BU carefully selects who the hosts can be for the program. A cultural difference is definitely table manners, especially at dinner. For example, one does not put their elbows on the table back in the US, here it necessary. It is like a symbol of showing your presence at the table and that you are involved in the diner and conversation. Another difference is that you don’t start eating until everyone has been served. I really like it, much nicer that the American way of eating as soon as you get served and not being mindful of everyone else in the table.

As for my internship, I interned at the French-British Hospital L’Institut Hospitalier Franco-britannique, where I shadowed several pediatricians in, well of course, the pediatrics department! It was beyond awesome! I love kids! I hope to one day become a pediatrician myself. This experience exposed me to my first hospital setting and I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I went abroad the first time, in Grenoble, I realized that the lab setting was not for me. I’m too social and need interaction with others to be locked away in a lab the whole day. I hope to take this experience as a step towards achieving my career goals of going to med school at some point. This is why I think internships and programs like these are so important. You won’t know what you do or don’t like, what will fit or won’t fit you, unless you try it and give it a shot. We can always learn from all types of situations.

Overall, it was also an inevitably amazing experience! It was my dream ever since I was young to one day live in this wonderful city and get to experience everything it has to offer. Differences are that everything is smaller, yet bigger in a sense. The cars are smaller, streets are narrower, people are tinier (lol) and then there’s everything else that’s bigger/longer: like the nights out, the monuments, and diners. Things just work differently in Paris (and Europe in general) there’s a much more “relaxed” style of living here, even with the busy metropolitan setting. I feel like the American lifestyle can be a vicious and repetitive cycle, whereas the French style is a more relaxed, spontaneous, and more flexible cycle. I like the change it is like a breath of fresh air.

The people here are different form those in Boston, who are then different from those in Texas. In Texas you have the southern hospitality feeling, whereas in the Northeast you have less of that. In Paris, you get a mix of both, a lot of people think that the french are mean, cold, and rude, which is plain stereotyping! You can’t really understand the culture until you have actually lived in it. Parisians are definitely different from the rest of the French though, especially with their chic and egocentric personalities (haha). I definitely tried to hang out and talk to Parisians, it is just a little harder when you’re older. The French have three types of friends by the time they are about 24: their grade school friends, their college friends, and their work friends. Once they have come to this age, it is harder for them to go out and about and make new ones; they’re set to go. This therefore implies more effort on the American part to be social and friendly, but definitely not impossible! You just have to put yourself out there a little more and chat someone up you find at a restaurant, bar, or wherever.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO STUDY ABROAD AT LEAST ONCE. It is a life changing experience and literally the best 4 months of your life. You will love it. Tips for people considering going abroad is that it isn’t always for everyone. You have to have an open mind, be ready to accept challenges, and be comfortable being out of your comfort zone, ironic huh? (haha) Like I said, everything is French, which can be frustrating at times, especially when you need to communicate with someone or express yourself and you can’t exactly always have the perfect words. But it gets better! Also, don’t always have the best expectations for everything, my experience here was very lucky, but not everyone gets the same package and experience (obviously). Some people live 30 minutes away from the BU center in Paris, whereas I live a couple of minutes away. Some people got an internship in fashion, I got mine in a hospital. It is different for everyone. On that note, don’t compare yourself with others, it is not worth it because you are two different people, with two different experiences. You have to MAKE your experience, it doesn’t just come all on its own. You have to be ready to take that extra mile sometimes and put yourself out there, just like you did when you were a freshman coming to college for the first time :)

Lots of love guys! And never forget, everything happens for a reason!

At first glance, it might seem that all we’re talking about it race and color, but it is so much more than that. At BU I’ve been able to express myself with the support of my peers and professors…

This semester, I started a Francophone Association with my friends that would serve as a revival of the old French Club but with a new and more open minded twist. The word “Francophone” includes all french speaking peoples from all over the world i.e. Algeria, Haiti, Canada… etc. As a Chinese-American with family living in France, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find my “niche” at BU and through this process, I’ve realized that there doesn’t have to be just one place for me to “belong.” At BU there are no “average students.” This club has reached many different people from extremely diverse backgrounds and although we all speak french, the other aspects of our lives bring in a lot of fascinating conversations about culture that are not confined to just the country of France. In the few weeks that this club has been around, I have met french speakers from Singapore, China, France, and Puerto Rico who were all interested in the Francophone Association.

As we dive into a new year and a new semester, I hope that I can continue to meet new people through the Francophone Association and the whole BU community. Though we might become too busy, or too stressed to be involved, I feel that the people I meet at BU teach me just as much as my professors do in the classroom. And so my new years resolution is to stay open minded and active in order to meet new people and expand my own views.

One of them was to explore Boston more, the wonderful city that BU students call home.

Today, with my roommate Sylvia, I decided to take a quick T ride to visit the Museum of Fine Arts (which is free for BU students!). Museums are dull and stuffy? WRONG. The MFA has everything for all different tastes in art. From Western to Eastern, ancient to contemporary, it truly has a wide variety.

One of my favorite exhibits was Mario Testino’s British Royal Portraits. As a boring, average American, I can’t help but be intrigued with the Royals. Of course, it was great seeing a young Prince William with a full head of hair.

I’m definitely coming back to the MFA. In addition to being rich in history like the city of Boston, it’s huge and always has something new for you to discover.

I currently have a 3.8 GPA and my computer based TOEFL score is 104. Although I plan on applying to CAS, most of my work experiences and extra curricular activities mostly involve the performing arts, (I teach ballet; perform in musicals; perform in charity concerts) Do you think I have a shot at getting into BU? Thank you!

BU looks for applicants holistically, meaning that they look for both good academics and involvement outside the classroom. First off, leaving home is an experience no matter how far you go. The initial fright or excitement of moving to a new city or just down the street is thrilling. I left my home in Miami to move to Boston. It was sad to leave the comforts of home, but I found a great new home in Boston University. I haven’t felt lonely here because it is really easy to meet new people here. The main thing that you should prepare yourself for is the new environment that you will be introduced too. Everything is there for you to take advantage of.

I also wish that I read more while in high school. In college you are required to read more and you will want to read more. Now I read the newspaper everyday and I am in the middle of a fantastic novel. On any free time you have, take some time to pick up an article and read it to practice reading faster. The work load here isn’t overwhelming, it is meant to challenge us to be better and work harder.

Good Luck with your college acceptances!

In this program, students will complete three years of undergrad in the College of Arts and Sciences before matriculating to BU’s medical school in their fourth year. As a pre-med student who is certain about a future in medicine, this program was perfect for me. What I liked the most about BU’s program was how it emphasizes a liberal arts education. I really enjoy the flexibility that the SMED gives me. All SMEDs must minor in a non-science related subject and instead of stressing out over meeting my science requirements, I can study fields like economics and business administration, which I am planning on minoring in. This is a great program for any pre-med students looking to become a doctor!

So many pastry shops in Little Italy that’s up near North End. The most famous one is Mike’s Pastry down at 300 Hanover Street. Some of their most famous items on the menu are their chocolate chip cannolis and red velvet cupcakes. The shop sells a myriad of desserts and pastries, usually at a price of around $2.50 - $5.00; cheap for any undergraduate student. There’s usually a long line of patrons even at night (which is when we visited.) The queue can sometimes wrap around the block during the daytime. The front display staffers are always efficient and friendly with their service.

We tried their espresso cannoli and hazelnut cannoli. Our other friends tried their Boston cream puff, hot chocolate, and pistachio cannoli. We HIGHLY recommend this shop. It’s a place that not only tourists should visit while in Boston, but also to our fellow Boston University friends!

I started designing when I was in high school, and then I found out about this show. I knew I had to be a part of it. I found the models and then worked with them to create three designs for the show. I worked out of my dorm room with a tiny sewing machine and some fabric.

The designs came out great and I had almost all of my friends come and support me. I can’t believe I got to have my fashions go down the runway like in a real show on Fashion Week. I can’t wait for the next show!

Winter is here.

We got our first snowfall of the year here at BU on Wednesday, thanks to a Nor’easter. Now, BU is this place where the girls want to be Carrie Bradshaw and the guys, Don Draper (ok, let’s pretend). But when the first dusting of white stuff appears on the ground, campus explodes with six year olds. East Campus pours onto the BU Beach for snowball fights and Nickerson Field in West Campus becomes a village of snow angels.

There is one part of this day every year that never lets me down. It doesn’t matter if the snow is perfect and powdery or practically rain. I love watching the faces of the freshman who have never seen snow before. It’s part awe, part shock, pure joy. They fall when they step in it, touch it like it’s going to disappear and try to catch a snowflake on their tongues like in the movies. Those of us familiar with this weather phenomenon watch and laugh and try to pretend we’re not just as excited.

My friend from Saudi Arabia is still my favorite. The brow furrows in confusion. She freezes stretching out her hand cautiously, “SNOW IS REAL!” Then we lost her to the storm for three hours. Best. Reaction. Ever.

The amazement will eventually wear off but for now the entire campus is just excited. Well, we’re all emotionally torn between excitement and the knowledge of impending finals.

Winter is here.

Finals are coming.

We must prepare. But first I’m going to build myself a snowman and savor a Salted Caramel Mocha from Starbucks. #holidaycups

Let it snow!

We started the season ready to go, practice every day, the designing of jerseys, and coming up with our name. Our first name was Lillziladahkillaz it then changed to the Penthouse Ponnies. The Penthouse Ponnies consisted of people from coast to coast and of various skill levels. When we got to our first game we were ready to go, we looked at our competitors and thought we’d be an equal match. We were mistaken and the only the only place we were ready to go to was the dinning hall. The game only lasted 20 mins of the 40 mins a game should last because they had to implement the mercy rule. We laughed so hard when we realized how bad we really were. The next two games had just about the same outcome, but through the despairs of our team, we bonded. And surprisingly we made it to the intramural tournament to be held next weekend. Hopefully we can overcome our losing streak and finally get a win. #goponnies
